San Francesco, Assisi - Lower Church

Chapel  of San Antonio Abbate (St. Anthony Abbot)

This chapel off the Narthex once had frescoes of the life of St. Anthony Abbot by Pace di Bartolo, but they have disappeared, destroyed by humidity. The chapel contains the tombs of Blasco Fernandez di Belviso, Duke of Spoleto, and his son Garcia, both murdered by those treacherous Ghibellines in the Castle of Piediluco in 1367. The painting below, attributed to Tiberio d'Assisi, was once in the chapel but is now in the treasury. The saints are Leonard, Anthony Abbot, Francis and Clare. The little group at the bottom left appear to be flagellants.
This is now a sacramental chapel: on my visit it was shut up and in darkness.
