San Francesco, Assisi - Lower Church

Chapel of Santo Stefano (St. Stephen)
(Original dedication to St Louis of Toulouse)

In 1535 this chapel was given to the brotherhood of St Stephen and St Gregory. The chapel was home to their Banner of the Pestilence. In times of plague and other crises, the banner was carried in procession. Currently it is used as a confessional chapel along with San Lorenzo, and the space between this chapel and the narthex.

The frescoes were begun around 1574 by the Assisi painter Dono Doni, but he died the following year and did not complete them. These show the life of St Stephen. The vault has frescoes of prophets and sibyls.
