San Francesco, Assisi - Lower Church

Chapel of San Sebastiano  (St. Sebastian)

This small chapel is immediately on your left as you enter the lower church. it was, it seems, originally intended as a passageway to the chapel of St Martin, but the way through was closed in 1646. Its dedication has changed over the years. Around 1500 it was known as the Chapel of the Cross, though it is not clear whether this was the first dedication. Later it became the chapel of San Rocco, then at the end of the sixteenth century the dedication changed to Saint Sebastian.

The frescos by Girolamo Martelli show the life of St Sebastian. Below is the altarpiece showing a vision of the Virgin and Child comforting the saint during his martyrdom.
