Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port

Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port (Saint John at the foot of the pass) is a small French town, just five miles from the Spanish border. It is a traditional starting point of the Way of St James, the Camino de Santiago. Traditionally, this begins at the Gate of St  James, below.

Before we set off, a visit to the town church is in order, Notre-Dame-du-Bout-du-Pont. In comparison with most of the Spanish churches we will encounter later, it is somewhat austere.
