Netley Abbey, Hampshire

Netley Abbey, Hampshire: a later Cistercian monastery, founded 1239 by Peter des Roches, Bishop of Winchester, though he died before building started. Monks from Beaulieu Abbey took up residence here. Being close to the coast, it was well known for its hospitality to travellers.
After the dissolution, the ruins were converted into an Elizabethan country house, but much of the original abbey survived. In the early 18th century, the then owner decided to demolish it. According to legend, the builder commissioned to do the job was killed when the first piece of masonry he tried to move fell on his head. This was taken as a warning, and the project was abandoned.
